Space, Time and Consciousness

Space, Time and Consciousness Chris King Feb 2014

This paper presents a potential mechanism for the conscious brain to anticipate impending opportunities and threats to survival through massively parallel weak quantum measurement (MPWQM) induced by the combined effects of edge of chaos sensitivity and phase coherence sampling of brain states. It concludes that the underpinnings of this process emerged in single-celled eucaryotes.

CA2D My Cellular Automata Application for Mac

Download from : CA2D Application

I've just finished developing a racy cellular automata application for Mac which has fast high resolution displays of some of the most interesting of these intriguing systems with formula inputs for generating more new examples than would fill a lifetime.

A Splash or Two of Precognitive Dreaming

The Persistence of Memory - Salvador Dali

Today, when I got up, I commented to my partner that I had had a bizarre dream that I was back in in a Maths Dept meeting, although I have now retired.

At lunch time I sent my coffee cup flying by accidentally poking my fingers into the rim as I was turning at the table, nearly drenching the keyboard and splashing myself down the trousers, with an uncanny feeling this was becoming a bad habit.

The next cup of green tea, which I have with orange juice to enhance the anti-oxidant epicatechin gallate, I caught the orange juice container, which had a loose lid, against the fridge door and sent the lid flying, scattering juice over the floor, but caught the container in mid-air. Then suddenly it all came back to me!

In the middle of the dream, in which I was making comments which everyone was reluctantly tolerating, because I was retired and shouldn't have an opinion anyway, (actually it was weirder than that - I was talking in a chirpy voice and they couldn't hear me as if I was a ghost - which is a signal of the deeper dreaming stratum), anyway in one of those dream disconnections, this was suddenly interrupted by me getting up scattering my coffee cup on the floor, when I stabbed my finger accidentally into the rim! Not only that, but when I went to bend over to try to pick it up, the entire coffee urn, which was a large chromed boiler on three legs, fell all over the floor as well and couldn't be uprighted because the legs had become rubbery wires, dysfunctional, like the cardboard orange juice container with the unglued screw cap.

So the dream has two splashed containers just as the day has, I reported the dream occurrence hours before the events happened, and it was only when the second splashing became real that the whole weight of the four mistakes reminded me of the full content of the dream and the uncanny implications ...

This harks back to the first precognitive dream I had when I dreamed two nightmares that I was being stung, told my young wife as she arose to feed our newborn daughter, and an hour later was stung wide awake in bed by a wasp that had flown in the window my wife opened after she got up.

My son's response was "of course it might be that the dream primed the events", but this is as much a violation of causality as precognition. Both the real events were accidents, not intentional acts, so priming suggests that dreaming something, particularly in these deep intense hallucinogenic uncontrolled phases of dreaming, might affect future outcomes, not just cause an imprint leading to the person acting out the dream later.

This is of course what quantum theories of dreaming and consciousness might be about, namely anticipating future events which could have significance for the survival of the experiencer. If one dreams a plane is about to crash and one is about to fly, perhaps the dream is priming towards a set of probability futures, or parallel universes, in which these experiences have a non-zero probability of occurring. The dream then leads to a capacity on the part of the experiencer to anticipate disaster and hopefully to evade annihilation.

If so, this anticipatory capacity is not necessarily confined to dreams, but may be the founding property which has caused brains to evolve to become subjectively conscious, namely to anticipate chance happenings beyond the organisms control - perhaps in waking life just in the immediate future of the 'quantum of the present' enabling one, through a degree of foreboding to jump out of the way of the tiger just in time, or on a slightly longer-term basis to intuitively help us decide which shady path ahead the tiger might actually be on.

This would appear to link the unstable and unpredictable properties of a brain state critically poised in self-organized criticality of edge-of-chaos dynamics to respond to quantum sensitivity of its own butterfly effect to generate a form of quantum entanglement that becomes sensitive to the potential future states of the whole system. This would then become the crack in the cosmic egg, in which consciousness has room to utilize Carlos Castaneda's cubic centimeter of chance to good effect.

Finally here is one that happened a couple of months later that shows the same reporting veracity as the stung dream. Last night I dreamed that a group of women had a newborn baby together and they turned to me and threw it out of their van, claiming they had had trying to look after it, claiming was actually mine. I caught it in mid-air and went to look after it but it had strange glutinous transparent white bowel motions. When I woke up I told Christine about it. Then tonight we were watching "House" and the first episode was "Maternity". It began with a couple with a newborn baby which then began to burp up its milk and had an intestinal blockage. Then it became a viral epidemic and second lesbian couple lost their baby. So there were the two elements together in the dream, a women-only group with a baby losing it and a baby with intestinal troubles emitting white glutinous liquid.

Navigating the Dark Heart of Chaos

I've complemented the Riemann zeta viewer with a suite of Mac XCode applications to visualize a full spectrum of complex functions, from the familiar 'dark heart' of the Mandelbrot set, through polynomials, and rational functions to a variety of transcendental functions.

The dark heart viewer enables exploration of functions with multiple critical points and shows where the higher dimensional variants of the parameter plane (Mandelbrot set) cardioid appear in subtle places in functions like the 'cubic' Cos(z) +c (compare Coz(z)+c below with the cubic z^3-z+c in the above icon) and the 'quartic' c(Cos(z)+Cos(2z))

The most up-to-date downloadable releases of the major XCode applications, which have been tested for both Tiger and Snow Leopard are as follows:

  1. Riemann Zeta Viewer: Application - Source - RZ Flight Manual
  2. Dark Heart Viewer: Application - Source - DH Flight Manual
  3. Wave Function Method Viewer: Application - Source - WF Flight Manual
  4. Modified Inverse Iteration Viewer: Application - Source
  5. Herman Ring 4D parameter Viewer: Application - Source
  6. Eight Critical Point csin(z)/z Viewer: Application - Source
  7. Collatz 3n+1 Complex Map Viewer: Application - Source

DHViewer and RZViewer are the twin primary applications covering most of the research examples.

RZViewer deals with all the weird analogues of the Riemann zeta function, while the twin application DHViewer examines a wide variety of rational and transcendental functions. This means that the widest variety of complex functions are explored including some of the most difficult ones to model.

The Wave Function method is a method I invented, which performs effective inverse iteration by forward mapping the domain and colouring by a wave function of the eventual iterated range. As far as I know it is the only method which enables inverse iteration of functions like zeta or compex functions whose inverses cannot be solved explicitly. For comparison see the modified inverse application which works only for the standard map f(z)=z2+c.

The Herman viewer examines the Herman ring map h(z)=cz2(z-r)/(rz-1), which has two complex parameters. Following each parmeter in sequence to give an effective 4D parameter exploration involving whole classes of Mandelbrot sets for the second parameter c.

The remaining XCode viewers and source code cover specific techniques with the standard quadratic function, have also een tested on Tiger and Snow Leopard and can be accessed through links in the papers.

Meaning of Life 4: Reflowering G-d

A correspondent: 'You wrote:”But you are both incorrect and foolish if you think the universe, is or can be, proven logically to be created by God.” I quoted a proof in my blog, which proves the existence of a Creator of this universe. Up to you to disprove it, not to assume that I am foolish.'

I'm not assuming you are foolish. I am saying your actions are not thought through. Science is based on the sceptical principle. Nothing is proved until natural evidence, which could refute it, is actually found to be consistent with it in every case. Your 'logic' is based on the reverse religious principle that your claim is true unless someone proves it false. This doesn't work in nature, or reality, and it sullies the water of truth.

Correspondent: "You wrote: “You are also wrong about the cosmos depending on the rule of order. Chaos is essential to the emergence of new order, to the evolution of living diversity, and to the subjective experience of consciousness.” On what scientific premises is this based on? All observed scientific phenomena follow the laws of nature, i.e. the universe is orderly. The burden of proof is on the person stating something contradicting to science.'

The laws of nature are not just orderly, they are also chaotic. They give rise to both order and chaos as complementary manifestations of how complexity arises. Stop for a minute and think about how impossible your postulate is. If what you say is true chaos couldn't exist. Neither in the weather, nor in the primal condition. It would have never been heard of. We wouldn't know there was such a thing. You wouldn't even know there was something called disorder or tohu vohu standing at the very source of genesis. Worse still the laws of nature are specifically predisposed to both chaos and uncertainty. Your fallacy comes from assuming law implies order. It doesn't.

The universe is full of examples, not only of chaos, but the necessity of chaos for new order to emerge, for the weather to change, for us to have new ideas, and for the diversity of life to flower. It is manifest in the equations governing the weather, in the dynamics of atomic nuclei and in the processing of the human brain. The phenomenon of "Eureka" is a transition from chaos to order as the answer is discovered and without the chaos that preceded it the solution would never come. Chaos fully explores the space of reality while order becomes stuck in the rut of fatal attraction. Chaos is ultimately sensitive so it results in unpredictable instabilities in the butterfly effect. Chaos is also coupled to quantum uncertainty in ways which science is in the process of discovering - that quantum chaos leads to quantum entanglement.

Now the Torah is a human account of God acting in history. You can pretend that the Pentateuch was written by Moses if you like but we all know that Deuteronomy was 'discovered' by the Yahwists only 23 years before Jerusalem fell to Babylon, in a subversive coup against the Host of Heaven and the older regional worship in the tabernacle. Most of it dates from the exile. The Bible also clearly bears the editorial stamp of many older authors from both Northern Israel and Judea. No matter how much we try to say it's God's book and therefore that God created the universe, this is fundamental error. In Genesis 1 the plants and animals and the sun and moon were all made out of order in a completely illogical manner that can't survive. It is a beautiful archetyopal but allegorical account, not an actual, or natural, description of creation.

This idea of God, although abstract and 'faceless' is still manifestly a male personality - a jealous lover of Israel in the Old Testament and a father who sacrifices his own son in the New. This idea of God is both wrong and dangerous, and Kabbalists knew this from before the time of Jesus and this is why we have the idea of the Shekhinah - the feminine face of reality - retreating after Adam and Eve were thrown violently out of paradise - and even further as the Fall continued into the tumult of apocalypse. In the Kabbalistic tale, the Shekhinah will return to grace reality in matrimonial concord only in the final unveiling, as reintegrating shattered sparks or shards , along with the Tree of Life. This is the tree of our long-term survival and the diversity of life.

Now everyone knows that the Song of Songs is not just a dirty little love poem that Rabbi Akiva mischievously inserted into the Torah, but the Holy of Holies - the very inner sanctum of our relationship with the mysterium tremendum. This tale is the tale of burgeoning fertility between the Mashiach in the person of Solomon and the Shulamite bride. Thus the inner truth of 'creation' is not a stand alone 'creator' but a complementarity, just as Wisdom crieth out from everlasting in the Proverbs that she was there with Him before his works of old - before the sun and earth were born. This is exactly the same story as Tao and Tantra tell.

This complementarity is clearly at the root of existence in wave-particle, boson-fermion, and space-time complementarity and it is in the existential condition in the complementarity between conscious mind and the physical body and brain. It is also manifest in the complementarity of sexuality without which we could not exist.

To suggest that God created a sterile, ordered universe which cannot evolve is an insult to the Shekhinah, to nature and to common sense. It is a violation because life is the crucible of transcendent awareness and it HAS to be able to evolve to fully flower and manifest the transcendent realization which the universe is here to witness. We now have the genetic codes of a large number of species and the traces of the evolutionary process are clear for all to see.

The Gnostics likewise thought of the male deity as a demiurge - a legislator - Samael or Saklas, who had usurped the cosmic condition, leading to the war of dark and light.

Jesus was not just a kosher conservative Rabbi in Galilee. There is abundant evidence from Josephus, the Talmud itself, and the gospels that Jesus was integrating all the religious and cultural traditions of his time including the fertility tradition, which is why he was anointed by a woman rather than a priest and why he was supported by the women out of their very substance and why they remained with him when the disciples fled as Zechariah wrote (see previous blog).

So I am asking you to reconsider your journey. We don't further our own fulfillment or the future of the universe by trying to force a mythical reality in the shadow of our own industrial manufacture and our ideas of morality and law on natural processes. Nature may be capable of evolving moral consciousness, but neither deterministic causality nor moral law can generate nature.

Music as Edge of Chaos Complexity

All music is deemed to be 1/f , fleshy 'pink' noise, characteristic of chaos and edge-of chaos complexity. Pink noise also strikes the balance between the memory-less randomness of 'white' noise and the monotonous predictability of 'brown' and 'black'.

Central to my musical production is the presentation of the conscious moment as one of complex uncertainty at the edge of chaos. To achieve this, I produce digitally mastered multi-track live recordings (8 to 16 stereo levels deep), which combine lyrics calculated to unravel our treasured cultural, religious and sexual assumptions, with instrumental improvisations designed to reveal their cutting-edge-of-chaos complexity only after many listening episodes, as multiple 'avatars' of my own conscious uncertainty 'moving on the face of the waters' in response to the developing piece.

I use many different kinds of world string instrument, including Appalacian dulcimer and Vietnamese classical instruments illustrated below, as well as keyboards, flutes, bells and live percussion, Tui, Kokako, and our nemesis, the Piwakawaka in memory of Maui.

Instruments used include Appalacian duclimer and Vietnamese zither and chordphone.

Each track has a unique lyrical foundation, with outline notes on its genesis. For the full suite of Nino Songs and their lyrics and all my research and written works go to: http://www.dhushara.com/

Verdant Unveiling: http://www.dhushara.com/nino/verdant.mp3

Completed yesterday. For our survival we need to turn apocalyptic tumult into reflowering the tree of living diversity. The apocalypse, or unveiling, is not Armageddon, but our bridal unveiling, in sexual reunion, under the Tree of Life, which God desecrated out of his loneliness and jealousy.

Burning Season: http://www.dhushara.com/nino/burning.mp3

A love ballad, echoing the Amazon burning season, about a beautiful internet love affair that resulted in a journey together, traversing the wild shores of Aotearoa, but was to be only for a season, because we each had deep family roots in opposite poles of the planet. See also Tane and Kohiti Rose.

Pandora: http://www.dhushara.com/nino/pandora.mp3

One of many celebrations of my ongoing long-term love affair with my partner Christine, sung giddily by both of us midverse. For more on our love songs Love, Overflowing, Uncertainty and Shadows of Your Mind and our written work, see Sexual Paradox.

Last Temptation: http://www.dhushara.com/nino/temptation.mp3

A gnostic noir unraveling the crucifixion, in the first person of Jesus speaking as the twin brother of Judas, as in the Gospels of Thomas and Judas, and as the lover of Mary and Martha, as in many gnostic works, and Kazantzakis' book by the same name.

See also Hymn to the Epoch completed with singers and a lyrical violinist in Old Jerusalem, the gnostic Dialogue of the Savior sung with Christine in 96 minors spanning every key and Eyal Loz on didjeridoo, and Black Rose a beautiful ironical dialogue with a Zionist fundamentalist woman from Tsvat who thought I was the Thief in the Night stealing the Holy of Holies of the Torah, for claiming the Song of Songs was a Tantric love poem, with Christine providing the spikenard as the Shulamite bride.

Deja Vu: http://www.dhushara.com/nino/dejavu.mp3

A song on dreaming and non-ordinary reality and the quest for the existential bridge between subjective consciousness and the physical world, with Eyal Loz playing drums.
